You ever wondered what is TikTok, why is it a big hype in 2019 and has been identified as one of the fastest-growing social media platforms of 2019. TikTok monthly installs surpassed those of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat this year. The outlook is rosy that its popularity will continue to grow also in the coming year. Today’s infographic by One Productions, a video marketing and production agency, shows what TikTok is, its functions and its features. Further, it looks into relevant stats, who is using it and where, advertising options, and case studies.

So… what is TikTok?

It origins from China and was launched back in 2016 under the name Douyin. A merger with the lip-synching social media app Musical.ly enhanced the app in 2017. Users of the app can share videos made in the phone vertical screen format with a length of 15sec. A feed of all the videos can be viewed by the users by scrolling up and down.

What are the App’s functions?

You can use filters on your videos and search for sound effects and music to score your video. Furthermore, you can add hashtags to your videos to discover challenges, lip-syncs, jokes and more. Users can engage with others through “response” videos or through “duets” (i.e.dublicate videos and add yourself alongside.)

TikTok on the rise

Up-to-date it was downloaded billion times. Between 2017-2018 TikTok experienced a year-over-year increase of 395%. In September 2018 it surpassed Facebook, Instagram, ToyTube, and Snapchat in monthly installs.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has been valued over $ 75 billion and is now the world’s most valued startup.

In China, 300+ million users are active every month with 150 million active users by the day. In the US 26 million users are active every month, users spend 46 minutes on the app per day.

Who are the users?

The app is used by 154 markets in 75 languages. 41% of the user base is between 16-24 years old. 2/3 of the users created content is created by females. It attracts mostly user lovers and 43% of the users have uploaded a duet video.

Should your brand use TikTok?

The question remains for the marketers here, shall I use TikTok video marketing in my digital marketing strategy? Yes, if your brand ties to music it is essential. If your audience is in the Gen Z segment than it is ideal. If you want to be recognized by the young audience and as a trendsetting brand than it is a positive sign to be present on TikTok.
